Volumetric Scavenger Hunt

The object of the Volumetric Scavenger Hunt is to try to find items that will not only fit in a container, but also take up the most volume in that container. This game is great for kids and adults alike, and variations can work for about any occasion or event. The game is also perfect to top off any roadside or river clean up activity.

Prior to the game, put a container in a box and seal it shut. Make sure no one can peek inside. At the event you might allow people shake the box or listen to it being shaken so they get an idea of the approximate size and shape of the container so they have an idea what to look for. Players will have specified amount of time to gather their items, perhaps 30 minutes. After that time they must bring their finds to the judging area. People write their names on their item with a grease pen, crayon, or permanent marker and submit it to the judge.

When the judging part starts, the box is unwrapped revealing the container. Once this occurs, players can no longer bring in items for judging. The judge attempts to insert each item into the container. If the item does not fit, the player is out. If the item does fit, the judge measures the excess volume.

The simplest method to determine volume is to use a tall pitcher or measuring cup filled with water. With a pitcher, you should mark a fill line with tape. Remember that in essence you are just trying to see which object when placed inside, takes the least water to fill the container. So after filling, just put a mark on your pitcher with a grease pencil, and put the winning item aside. If there are some close contenders, compare them at the end to kill any doubts. Then just award the winner(s) the prizes!

Some variations include having more than one container in the box, giving clues that tell what type of jar it is, or let people even see the jar. You have the goal to seek out an item of a specific volume, instead of the most volume.
